Tasty

tasty homepage

Tasty seems to be a social community that houses all things cooking. With the backing from Buzzfeed you can see why this makes sense.

Cooking is quite a lucrative venture especially if you can carve out your own niche or have people helming the front of the brand.

Tasty is a nice example of how a cooking "empire" should be. Have everything for everyone but also have some niche stuff to make you different. Also it should look like it is quickly put together but there is a professional polish to this.

Tasty Positives

We have to ask ourselves not what Tasty has but what it is missing- that would be easier. So, what does it have:

  • A website. Crammed with information from subscribers and the food community. So popular recipes, latest recipes, guides, shop, links, stories, what people are making, desserts, seasonal food, trending items
  • Newsletter
  • Youtube channel- 21.4 million subscribers, 5k videos, 6 billion views
  • Facebook- with...104 million followers...pretty impressive
  • X.com- 2.1 million followers
  • Insta- 45.8 million followers

So...ermm...

Why are we talking about Tasty then? If we had 104 million Facebook subscribers then surely that would be a win wouldn't it?

Tasty improvements?

Now this seems like really picking and finding something that has to be talked about. But Tasty is a fine example of a social hub. information collated an assessed (?). It also has a big backing (from Buzzfeed? Or does Buzzfeed own Tasty?)

And remember, this is a suggestion area. They might work, might not. But it is in no way to say negatives things about Tasty.

So are there any improvements?

Actually yes, there are some issues that seem to stick out which, once fixed, could actually help Tasty.

  • The App. Now We are assuming that the app is for Tasty right?
tasty

It is under the Buzzfeed App, but it doesn't say Tasty App- even though highly likely it is. Also the link doesn't work on a PC using FireFiox. Same if you use the link on X.com:

  • Why isn't there a link to the main website from Youtube?
  • Are there any other chefs/ celebrities? I don't see a video collection featuring some Youtube/ social media celebrity showing off their skills. Admittedly you don't need the views but it would be a good spread into the community in what your audience could be looking at.
  • Shop. I found this the most odd link on the channel/ website. I click on Shop Now on Youtube and I get sent to Penguin House website to download a cook book. Nice, but not a shop. I have to click on the about Tasty to see other books:

So it is not really a shop, just a book area. But at the moment we like that the books have the Tasty brand added to them. OK. So how about we go onto the main website. And click on Products:

We click on ShopAll for the books. it takes us to a huge page on...Amazon! It has many more books and all with good ratings and many ratings.  But still not necessarily a shop.

Anyway. We click on the Featured Cookware Shop All link. That takes us to...Walmart! Again, decent reviews and numbers of reviews.

But still no shop. With the amount of people running through Tasty I would have assumed that having a branded shop would be easier to do. Unless that is not the point- to look after the backened of a shop?

Oddly enough there are featured and best tasty stickers on some of the cookware. Can't find those on the website.

Also, when going onto a recipe there are no links to any of the shop utensils.

But. It seems like you can fill a cart with ingredients through Walmart or through the Tasty App.

tasty app

Now this seems like a genius of an idea. And I looked for the app and this is what we found:

If you have the proper Walmart store this is very clever technology. And I have to say, it is a really good idea. So good that you would have thought millions of people would have liked the video right?

Amazing comments

Done 5 years ago...wait what?

Yep, this video, which is really clever, has only been viewed 41k times within 5 years. Compared to a 44 second Potato Puff Balls video that has got over 1 millions views.

So there is something wrong here. And it is probably the following:

  • the main tagged video that pops up on the main channel when you first enter is not the App. It is a recipe from 1 month ago. Why, why not something that probably makes some money?
  • can not find that App video on the main page of the website. Instead we have other food stuff that circles you back into content
  • the link from X.com? Doesn't work on our PC with FireFox
  • Newsletters. Let this picture cook for a while:
tasty newsletters

I understand about segmenting your email list. But if I am new to Tasty when am I not new to Tasty and then go over to the Tasty Newsletter? Is trending the same as the main newsletter? How are you going to personalize my email, are you going to ask more questions?

I like it that you give a brief overview and how many emails are sent a week. Go to show this screen grab though:

tasty newsletters 2

There is also a newsletter subscription box at the bottom of the screen- without tags on which newsletter you want.

Wouldn't it be better to have newsletters on: New cooking utensils, daily tips, what top chefs are cooking up, breaking food news,

  • Youtube Links part 2.

Unsure where "Shop the NEW Tasty Merch: https://bzfd.it/shoptastyyoutube https://bzfd.it/shoptastyyoutube goes. Took us to Buzzfeed

Subscribe to Tasty Newsletters: https://bzfd.it/2SC4h0S. Took us to Buzzfeeds list of newsletters rather than Tasty's version

Shop the Tasty Kitchenware line: https://t.co/0dPSuobra7. Broken link

Unsure why Buzzfeed is linked to. Sure they own Tasty but the link leads to their main page rather than anything related to food.

Might come back to Tasty at some point as it is so big it is going to take time to go through it. But maybe Culinary school, grants for people to get into College. Or yearly Charity work, one year it could be feeding school kids, another year is to pay off school lunches. Those type of social interactions might be a nice addition.

As always, we wish Tasty all the best
