An ebook selling website that is designed to sell ebooks must look like something right?
Yes it can and in many ways- it can not :)
Before being more cryptic, lets take someone who is selling ebooks, books and appearances and see what they do and how they actually sell.
Step forward Jefferson Fisher.
Jeffersons About Us page is this:
"I’m a Texas board certified personal injury attorney and law firm owner of Fisher Firm.
In 2022, I began making videos of my practical communication tips to help people argue less and talk more. I recorded them the same way as I do today—in my car, in between hearings or after work.
Today, I'm one of the most respected voices on communication and arguments in the world. Millions of people and some of the world's leading brands come to me for advice and practical strategies to communicate more effectively.
Whether it's through my videos, podcast, or live talks, I'm committed to helping you become more articulate, confident, and persuasive in every conversation."
It took us ages to write ours- background, ups and downs (just like we are told). Make you more down to earth, list your struggles and the journey.
It doesn't look like that here. It is- who I am, what I have done, what I am doing. It's nice and direct to the point. Maybe that is the point. If you are selling communication products then direct sentence structure is your thing.
We noticed that someone had bought Jeffersons book. About how to articulate yourself in certain situations.
We asked why they bought the book- and it was a physical book- not an ebook. They said (in bullet point):
The whole point of this is that we know that there is going to be multiple areas where Jefferson is going to be selling or appearing.
But before we start promoting online, we have to figure out "what" we are promoting. You do not promote ebooks, you promote the person who wrote the ebooks as a driver for wanting to read the ebooks.
Jefferson has a professional image to keep and that has to be displayed everywhere. Remembering he also has a Law practice. Anything online might reflect upon that business. It may also increase clients.
But there are many lawyers online, so how is Jefferson differentiating himself from others?
Well, the main niche of Jefferson is being articulate and answering questions and being able to handle situations that are good for you and indirectly, your mental health. It is effective communication. It is also using our doubts that we are not effective and our own plus points that we want to become better.
But how does someone do that? How do you promote being an effective communicator?
Well Jefferson leans directly on his layer background. Who doesn't want to be an effective communicator like a lawyer?
You will notice then, that most of the pages and marketing is going to have either lawyer, or Fortune 500 clients thrown in there somewhere. It "proves" to you that Jefferson is truthful. He is removing the doubts and promoting professionalism and trying to be on brand wherever he can. This works well in almost all situations when you are trying to promote proof and trust. State you background- just like Noah Kagan does.
A quick search online and you find that Jefferson is everywhere. He (or his publisher) is using most of the social sites to get the name around. The likeliness that you will go to Jeffersons website and buy a book, in our thoughts, would be low. Compared to if you went straight to one of the many book stores online.
Promoting your website is OK, but you then are running the risk that once on, people are going to find your book. Why take the risk? Amazon allows you to sell your ebook anywhere, so why not (unless you are in the KDP Select group, then you can't).
Here is a list of the sites where Jefferson is on (the first 3 are in order). We looked for "Jefferson Fisher Book". Also note that his book is advertised through Amazon and gets top and bottom slots on Google:
That is the end of the second page of Google search. Next page was Facebook, Google Play, Waterstones (book store) and Spotify.
Oddly enough, when we checked out "Jefferson Fisher The Next Conversation", the only difference was Podcasts, Youtube, Facebook and LinkedIn were more into the first and second pages.
Not what you think. There is very little content on the selling page. But what there is is professional layout with as much trust factors as you can place on a website without it looking odd.
Main page. And these are done in rectangle sections on the main page.
Each section does something. They either promote proof or get you to signs up or listen. The book is nowhere to be seen.
The actual book page?
That's just the start- above the fold. Here's the book, here's where to buy it from. Next:
Very little "content" that Google likes with most of it being pictures and links. This suggests that Jefferson is picking up sales from the site but mainly highlighting 3rd party providers to sell for him.
But...
All the pages are directing you to either:
He is trying to keep the audience. And, we haven't read the book or heard the Podcasts, but we are close to certain that the website is mentioned. This is great because it uses "free" traffic from those same third party websites to generate traffic. Jefferson is also making sure that he has his "own" traffic through signups or followers on those same platforms...just in case.
Does it work?
Well, apart from the 10m followers, Jefferson has also got 250K email subscribers- which is a ton.
Clearly Jefferson is selling through third party websites and some through his own. But it is really important to recognise that Jeffersons marketing process is to try and get traffic to stick with him.
It almost seems like a splatter of social websites. But the websites that help are ones that are promoting Jefferson.
What do they all have in common?
Speaking and communication. What is Jeffersons brand all about?
"You Deserve To Communicate With Confidence". As his website states.
Would Jefferson get the same affect through an article? No, of course not. You can't really portray communication with confidence through word. And if Jefferson is ramping up the views in Insta, Podcast and Youtube then he knows that verbal delivery marketing methods work well.
