The One Tip To Boost Your Amazon Product Ranking

amazon product ranking

Amazon product ranking is a whole host of different factors- something that we outlined in our Amazon Sales Rank here.

Amazon looks at a lot of different small factors and then ranks you against a competitor. It does this for 2 reasons.

  • What happens if you have the same product as your competitor
  • If you both have the same amount of XY and Z

There has to be a difference somewhere.

Somewhere along the sales process there is a difference. And that is why small micro factors affect Amazon sales ranking.

And why do you need ranking in Amazon? Well apart from being the first place people go to to buy online (now surpassing Google). There are also a lot of products within the same category- with niche categories starting to fill up as well.

If you had to choose one factor to influence Amazon product ranking the best, what would that be?

It is so simple in theory but difficult in practice.

You need to get a sale.

But. That sale also needs to be continuous

A sale kicks back into the Amazon ranking machine and you jump up in rank. However:

  • Amazon knows when  a sale is on- it allows it but also throws in a damper effect to lessen the sale overall.
  • A sale will also kick in an old product
  • A sale on a new book doesn't necessarily bump you ahead of an old book but, if that old book is not getting sales- and it is exactly the same topic, then the new book will win.

Why is "sales" such a big issue?

Amazon is in the business of satisfying the customer. As we have seen, if a competitor comes in then Amazon can be shaken, It has only got its reputation and customer service as its "moat"

A sale means a lot in Amazons eyes, but that sale also comes with catches:

  • It must be continuous. One sale here and one sale there is not going to be ranking you super high
  • Amazon will question something if it has hundreds of links pointing towards it, hundreds of stars and reviews and only one sale. It doesn't add up
  • They also count returns- if you have 5 stars, great reviews and tons of returns, then that is not good either

There are also some one page issues as well. If someone comes onto your page , clicks away and then goes onto a very similar product then Amazon is going to wonder why your page is not converting.

So conversion is also a good idea. And how do we get conversions?

  1. reviews
  2. stars
  3. high quality pictures, short videos
  4. testimonials where possible
  5. description of what the items does and what you get

The ideal:

Sales with a good range of reviews and high star amount (doesn't have to be 5 stars or completely positives reviews as this seems more genuine). A decent amount of links in and a good conversion rate will trigger Amazon product ranking love.

But as you can see. Just plowing in traffic is not going to generate a sale.

All these points are a cycle in a sales machine

  • Positive reviews are going to be given for a product that is genuine and good
  • Your product has got to be something that people want, is of good quality, can be delivered in a timely manner (if physical) and at a price you can justify

Sales can only occur if you have decent reviews and stars. Reviews can only be generated if your product is worthy.
