Doctor Mix
You might see that Doctor Mix is a Youtuber. Well, in fact Claudio's Youtube channel is the side hustle. The main job is mixing and producing through the DoctorMix.com website.
It is this main website that we will be checking out rather than the Youtube channel. However, you find that both are linked together in some good and bad ways.
The positives of Doctor Mix
Claudio is clearly very talented and the team at his London studio equally talented. This comes off in quality of videos, time spent on content and how the crew seem very comfortable talking to the camera.
The website has many positives:
- the homepage is very clean and you know what the site is about as soon as you see it
- the blog is cool, some of the posts need to be signed up and others don't (?).
- there are links directly on the main page- above the fold, that direct you to the service you desire
- trusted brands are shown, ticker tape style flowing across the screen increasing trust
- other items for sale are also present- sound packs, and courses
- really enjoy the DoctorMix difference player- you play a song with and without their magic. Clever idea and saves a whole amount of text:
But can Doctor Mix do more to sell their stuff?
Now you can probably see in the previous text what we have done. Who is Claudio, who are their team? It gets frustrating when it isnt explained. Here is one of the text pieces from their sales page for mastering: "Hand-Crafted by Seasoned Audio Engineers". Who?
Well I know who is one of the team. They are a world known producer who also does movie scores. Even on the About page, this is what is said about the crew: "Experience: With years in the business, we know what works".
This is the main issue with the Doctor Mix website. Why should it matter? Because:
- just mastering is 38 pounds
- Mix and Mastering is 189 pounds
- Remix and complete production is 749 pounds
Thats a lot of cash. Even though you are more than likely competent to do it, you still have to sell yourself a little more to get people to invest that type of money.
- Trust info. There could be ton of cool info from the team, bios, small videos about them/ background. Anything than a 1 line sentence. About Claudio the founder? "While Doctor Mix has grown, our founder Claudio Passavanti has been a guiding force. From early YouTube success with humorous musical content to collaborations with major audio brands, Claudio's journey has always been about enriching music and artists.". Thats it on the About Us page. You have to find elsewhere the link to the actual bio of Claudio. Why no link to that here?
- Awards? Even if it is Youtube awards, this adds more trust factors. I know Claudio has sold records and quite a few of them at that, how about the stats from these somewhere?
- Testimonials. This is where the site really comes down to not showing their trust factors. Showing logos of businesses is cool you need to have a page, videos of people commenting about your products, their success, their happiness...anything to show that people are using them. We know people are but you need to have that familiar face. If it is business you are trying to target then get some of the companies to talk about you. Do what Amazon does and do a profile of the company/ product that your music was used in. Free ads for them and a behind the scene look at what goes into creating tracks commercially. If they don't want to do it then get an artist who is not signed and ask them, do a "fly on the wall" video about them and the process. It is just kinda noticeable that this is missing on the site.
- Products. I am unsure if the courses and sound packs should be on the same page as the main profit centre of the business. Does one flow into another? How many people who have bought a course/ sound pack then go onto buy a mastering session? Do you put in their sales piece a discount code so that they can try it out? If customer are coming from Youtube for the packs and courses then they can be transported to a different page. And they should be, they shouldn't have to find the course/ pack that they want.
- What is in the product? The links to the teaser videos can only be found through Youtube description. One Youtube video is only present on the sales page. The title of the episodes are nice but really need a slightly more detailed explanation of what those titles mean (in normal jargon explaining the point- like "how to select and choose the right using beats to power your dance music every single time"
- Equipment. The equipment in your studios are awesome, but, they can be scary. It is mentioned a few time about not needing the equipment used but most of the videos use the expensive equipment. The first image you see on the video of "how to make dance music" is a TR909- an expensive machine. Can you use a virtual instrument?
- Contact Us. Should there be a FAQ link to commonly asked questions on this page?
- Newsletter. Now, this one was difficult to find. Sometimes I can find it (some blog posts), other times I can not. One time I found it when I placed something in the cart and you could also signup to the newsletter. I placed something else in the cart and I didnt get the same addition of a newsletter. It seems like there is one. Unsure how many subscribers (nice to show for more proof and gets more people to signup). It should be somewhere quite prominent to allow people to signup. A page dedicated to it would be even better to explain what people can find within it (exclusivity, discounts, Q&A only to subscribers etc). Should also be on the Youtube channel. Again, the newsletter will soft sell the services you offer, get people to know you, and get more of a rapport which is then used to sell the larger ticket items.
- Prices and delivery. This is an odd one. There seems to be 2 sellers of Doctor Mix videos/ courses- Doctor Mix and Udemy. When you go through the main website you buy through Claudio. If you buy through Youtube, you get a discount and you go to Udemy. Sometimes both at the same time. The following is from a teaser video from "how to create house music" on Youtube
2 links- one to the product on Doctor Mix website, the other to their main services. Maybe too many links to dilute the audience (in the first few lines). There are many more after that jump you to other video teasers for the same product. Nice, but could again be too many links. How about just one link to the one product and each video has one link to the one product only? Anyway, further down the description we have this one:
First, why? Second, which link do you think people are going to visit? Why split up the links? Have separate products for Udemy (and can you use those Udemy reviews on your website as testimonials?).
- Products 2. OK. So you have a course on How To Make Dance Music. So why isn't your shop full of how to make Techno, EDM, industrial electro? On your homepage there is a cool comparison area of different genres so we know you can make them, so try to get more people onto the site by create different products for those genres. How about more "how to sound like" products? People search online not necessarily for specific genres as such, they might not know it. But they search by artist and then emulate that artist. One of the most watched Youtube videos on your channel:
Do we have something similar in your shop? No.
Oh, found your merch on this video. Couldn't find it before. Cool stuff- but difficult to find. Ooh, on this video we also found your sign up page for offers etc:
Thats all we get. Are we registering for the website, newsletter?
- Just a couple of issues. On the terms & Conditions part of the shopping cart, the link doesn't work. Are the videos downloadable, are they Youtube, what format, what else do you get. If it is all digitally downloadable then why can't I change the currency?
- Affiliate. Would an affiliate system be helpful to sell more of your products? Now it adds a little more time (and some reduced profit especially if you use a outside company. But, it would also spread your products to more music leaning websites and companies. If you do have an affiliate system I cant find it.
As per always we wich Doctor Mix all the best
