affiliate marketing for digital products

Ok, so you found your audience, you know what they want. So how do you do your affiliate marketing for digital products?

Well, you have 90% of the job done- audience and issue. Now you just need to show your audience the product. Some ways you can actually:

  • Show them a link
  • Give them information before the link

Because that is what it is all about. Showing an audience with a concern a solution for that concern. But that solution can be given in multiple different ways.

But remember, you are not creating a sales page- that is what the product creator does. Your job is to make clicking onto the sales page a easy thought. The sales page seals the deal.

So how does this work?

Well, you find the tip that you like and then go fully into it. Once you have done so, go that going on autopilot then you move onto the next tip you like. Going a minor amount into each won't help too much, will get you overwhelmed and frustrated that nothing is working.

Here are 21 if the better ways to show your solution. And btw, they are tried and trusted.

The start of the 21 affiliate marketing for digital products.

affiliate marketing

1. Niche.

Said it before multiple times, will say it again. Niche and even niche some more. Then once you have gained the audience you can increase your niche back to the more competitive niche topics.

Adam Enfroy, a successful affiliate marketer, specializes in software tools for bloggers and entrepreneurs. Instead of promoting every product under the sun, he focuses on tools like web hosting, SEO software, and email marketing platforms. His blog features detailed reviews and comparisons specifically for people building online businesses.

2. In-depth Tutorials.

These work by showing that you know the subject, the product that you are using works- with positives and negatives. It also acts like a beginners course. And how easy or difficult something can be.

Youtuber Ali Abdaal promotes Notion, a productivity software, through comprehensive tutorials. He creates videos showing how students, professionals, and creatives can use Notion to organize their lives. He includes his affiliate link in the video description and encourages viewers to try Notion for free.

3. Bonuses.

These work exceptionally well. When someone buys a product, that is all that they get. But if they are buying through your link you can give them additional products for that click. The bonuses need to be very relevant. They also need to have been researched- what does the product offer and what doesn't it offer? Your bonuses will be the those things the product doesn't offer.

In the past people bought through our link due to the bonuses that we offered- and sometimes just for the bonuses. We put a lot of effort into them.

Affiliate marketer Matt Diggity excels at this technique. When promoting SEO tools like SurferSEO, he offers buyers an exclusive course on maximizing the tool's potential if they sign up through his affiliate link.

4. Email

Email is very successful in communication with prospects and conversions. If people see that you are sincere in your emails, that you offer items and content for free- and it is good. Then linking to something that you like is way less of a barrier. Also you can promote products every now and then.

There is also a nice technique with email. It allows people to jump around- from email to website to pdf. It makes them used to clicking on links. this reduces barriers to clicking on affiliate links.

There are multiple marketers that promote through email. Pat Flynn of Smart Passive Income integrates affiliate links into his email marketing campaigns. He promotes products like Teachable and ConvertKit by sharing his personal experiences and case studies with his audience. His emails often include a free resource or mini-course to encourage sign-ups.

5. Social proof

And oldie but goldie. Social proof shows that other people- usually outside of your sphere have bought the product and they have also left reviews and ratings. You don't need 5 stars each time, you need a mixture of 4 and 5 for it t be authentic. But sales increase with reviews and ratings. Some sellers put the reviews on the page between the text. Others will show Youtube screen shots. Social proof is very important for sales. And as an affiliate you just need to find them and integrate them within your content.

You using the product directly is social proof. You offering testimonials is social proof.

6. Video.

Video is good for almost all products. If offers proof, it is another level of interaction. It creates sharability and it is also good for SEO. The Click throughs can range a bit. But if you can Youtube something. Then can you Youtube short the same video. Can you make that into a TikTok or Insta product?

You will also find out that video is much better suited to some products over others. Anything that allows the viewer to follow with what is going on always helps. If you have a blog article can it be changed to specific points for a short video or you chatting about it?

7. SEO

SEO is finding the power of "free" traffic through optimisation of content. It is cool to do but it can drive you insane in trying to capture those specific 6-8 places within the front page of search. Make sure that your content has some optimisation but also think of customers and how they interact with the content. Those customers sharing, commenting and linking to your page will give you more SEO oomph. Remember as well SEO is better dependent upon questions rather than a specific keyword. People search for issues or a string of words rather than one word searches.

8. Retargeting

If someone visited your page but didn't buy you can follow up with them through Facebook Ads. It has been proven to be successful with the "7 touches and you get a sale" effect. However. In our experience it helps with people who don't really know you/ lack of relationship with. You can use testimonials, discounts or free items within the Ad to "remind" people of your offer.

9. Niche Communities

These are the forums, blog communities, Facebook groups and other sites where your targeted audience resides. If they are really into your niche and they have immersed themselves within a community then they are more prone to finding out products and information rather than just "looking up info". Niche communities have rules- many your can't self promote- but you can add a signature bio under each response. It helps with SEO, helps with increasing your reputation and also allows you to figure out what is missing within the community- which could be another affiliate product :)

10. Test

Testing is one of the ways to increase conversions. And conversions can be direct to your page, a link, an offer- anything that you want to track. A title can be changed and people will click on your search result more. A product could be tested against another product. A graphic on your page could convert more than an in-text link. The only thing you need is a steady flow of traffic then you just figure out what to test and see if the results increase or decrease. Colours can change results but initially text and graphics will do more.

11- Comparison articles.

As long as you are trustworthy and are stating the truth then comparison articles and videos help make up the mind for a customer when seemingly equal products are present. They work well when you offer positives and negatives, customers see you use them both and even a 30 day later update is particularly helpful. People also like customer service and help desk info. It reduces concern in the buying process.

12- Funnels and landing pages.

There's so much about these 2 marketing types. But you are trying to get the customer on a journey and follow them until you have a "landing page". If you are selling an item about screen grab software then all the articles/ videos/ content should flow through a funnel and direct the person to that products sales page or your pre-selling page. At not one step should the customer be able to find different products and be taken off in a different direction without being given an offer. Your landing page could even be an email sign up. And even that email should be dedicated to what the customer wants. And all those email follow ups should be about screen grab software- nothing else.

13- Time limits.

These work well if the time limit is genuine. We once saw an ad for 4 digital ebooks that will run out of print soon. How, how can that be? Black Friday, Cyber Monday are all time limits on sales and products. You could remove bonuses at a certain time. They work better though when people are given the chance to participate and then know when the time stops. Black Friday is hyped up weeks before the day- people are stoked for that offer. But the offer states that it is only on the one day.

14. Personal Story.

A story or case study is very helpful in selling products because you try and become the customer. If your thoughts can align right with the customer then they can see them selves in your progress and journey. This only works with truthful stories or case studies and if you list the stages of your progress. We sold an ebook creators by buying the product and listing how we created an ebook and how it was used to promote other products. People could see the process and the end result.

15- Influencers.

This is similar to niche forums and websites. But in this case you are dealing with someone who has traffic and influence on that traffic. Niche influencers have smaller audiences and are more likely to help. You usually follow them and figure out how you can help them without asking for anything in return. Guest post, offer eProducts that you have created to help them. Chat to them. Always giving. Then you can negotiate rates and maybe a shoutout/ link to their audience.

16- Free.

Now free is a very loose term. But if the company doesn't offer a free version, can you create a tutorial on how the product is used and create a free video/ ebook combination? Can you offer a portion of the product for free? You would have to discuss with the owner, but offering up free chapters usually helps in the promotion (Hence why Amazon offers a "look inside" to books). Some people offer a "free look around" if the product is a subscription but you can't download. Others offer a time limit on the free item. The offering of free and a look at the product promotes people buying and reduces concern about the product respectively.

17- Giveaway/ Discount.

Now you have to be careful with competition laws but giveaways are quite helpful in generating commissions. These work well if you offer something for free that costs- or offer something that is widely cheap. This is how AppSumo started. They offered a subscription to some software at a really low price (or even free) for a year. It got sign ups.

18- LiveChat/ LiveFeed.

Did you know one of the best ways to advertise a product that is not advertising is through demonstration. If you can show people- preferably live, on how to use a product. it shortcuts, what it can do, everything. Then people will buy. You answer questions live, you demonstrate live. And it works really well. You need to do your homework though and set up a system to direct questions to you- and find (common) questions before you start.

19- Seasonal.

This can be tough if your product doesn't have seasonal aspects. But don't count yourself out too much. On Black Friday you could promote an offer. At tax time you could promote a tax software system. For summer you could promote chill and relax books and software. For New Years how about a fitness regime- which also could be promoted again before summer time. As long as you instill a reason for the sale then it doesn't worry customers. Sales without reasons worry customers.

20- Testimonials.

If your products doesn't have any testimonials then buyers are going to be skeptical. This is probably why Amazon introduced verified buyers, buyer stories and pictures. It is the original social proof without using social media platforms. If the product you are trying to sell doesn't have any on the sales page then search high and low for them.

21- Have a point.

Being clever is great. But selling something is even better. Making obscure ads, videos and content might give you a warm feeling but if that content doesn't generate any sales then whats the point? You have probably seen the same adverts as us and wondered- what on earth are they selling? Your targeted audience just wants to know what the product can do for them. That's it. Just get out of the way once explained. All your affiliate marketing for digital products should be focused on that: this is what the product did for this person (or me), here's how it can help you too.

Would you do all of these?

Some people do- see what sticks etc. Others master one and then move onto the next. It depends. Usually on what you like, what you can accomplish well and if you have the time.

A nice idea is to focus on one and then dabble in the others. See which ones work well with your audience. You might find you get sales conversion from email rather than a free product.

2 more side tips.

If you are finding that you are sending and converting to a sales page really well you can ask the product creator if they can bump up your commissions. This has happened to a few people who asked. Their commissions increased just by asking.

If you are converting well you can also ask for a specific sales page that is branded for you. In this case the sales page doesn't jolt the customer when jumping to it. It works well when it is a private company.
