How did Taylor Preston, new author started selling an ebook on Amazon? Then went onto sell 5000 books in just 1 month?
The low down:
So how was this done?
Well, on his website he goes into depth how it was done. Here we will take the key concepts and discuss them and add our thoughts.
1. Taylor copied/ reverse engineered what top business books were doing on the New York Times best seller list. Why invent when someone else had done it? Remember that most of those books have large marketing departments behind them. many a dollar has been spent to figure out how people buy books.
2. The title, which people judge content online was thought provoking- The End Of Jobs. Now we know that the end of job might be not 100% true but what it does is to intrigue you. What jobs? How could this happen? Could it be reduced?
3. Treat it like a business. Send your book to people who you trust, have an idea of the content and can edit the text for you. When people write book we know that you either go overboard and spend too long on a book or you don't spend enough time. Get the book done, make sure it is professional and then move on. But it doesn't have to be a masterpiece. It just needs to portray what you are thinking.
4. Taylor has been writing a blog for a while. This step is usually left out on "ho tos". There is an audience and one that knows the author. Now you have a better chance of people responding to emails and possible something that is being sold. So early subscribers/ readers were found and they were given the chance to read the book for free.
5. Taylor would also find the advocates- people that have been promoting, talking etc about the blog, Taylor or any of his products. These were then conversed with. They loved it and they spread the word without any advertisements. Sometimes reaching out is the most simplest forms of marketing ever. Online blogs are looking for content, content that could also be new and talked about.
6. The blog showed topics where people were interested in. So, just by looking at blog post stats you can figure out which ones are the most read. This then give you a nice idea of what to write about. Blogs can also be used to create titles of books. So creating article titles and then seeing which ones are clicked on most gives you a nice idea of the title for your book. Tim Ferris did one where he created lots of ads and saw which titles people clicked on the most. That became the FourHourWorkWeek.
7. There was a lot of pre-selling, pre-promoting before the book even came out. People were aware of topics and those topics then eventually linked to the book
8. Taylor made a list of forums, Facebook groups and other places where his target audience would be around. This is very similar to all the successful eProduct sellers. He would then discuss topics and over time guide people in his books direction- or use a link within the signature line of the posts. Oddly enough, some people had already been talking about the book on some groups when it was released and he joined in the discussion
Taylor goes through in detail his writing process, routine and structure which we wont go through here. But it is nice to read especially if you need more structure.
9. Unless you can do it yourself (really, no lying here, be honest), pro design the cover
10. Like many authors, free was key to get the "word" out there.
11. He gave himself a limit of time to do things. So 3 months out he would write blog posts, line up interviews, and go all in with a medium which he was comfortable with- which was Podcasts. Again, pre-planning made sure that Taylor knew which Podcasts to aim for he also did the following:
Rob comes from the perspective of ABC. Lets do A then you do B etc.Again, it can be found on his website, but we'll add our thoughts and opinions as well.
So first off:
1. Create the book in the first place. Most people create an ebook based on what they like and enjoy. But. They also create the ebook following a trend (on the up) or have found something that people need help with. Writing an ebook without an audience is going to be a very hard sell.
2. Set up all of your social pages, website and Amazon KDP page. One part of this is cool is that Rob suggests targeting one thing- so X.com or Facebook. Find which one you are good at then stick to it. Too many social means a thinning out of your time and not getting the best out of that platform. Please note though that Facebook is quite friendly towards pass on- thats how DudePerfect started. We believe you should do this first and grow that audience early. You can even tell them about your writing journey.
3. Goodread.com. Rob went onto Goodreads and chatted with authors commented and then interacted with reviewers. If you notice. This is similar to Taylor's tips- trying to find people and interacting with them.
4. Get 25 reviews (minimum). Easy to do. Find 25 friends and then give them a copy of your book- they will have to disclose that they were given a free copy, but most people are not too concerned about it. You might need to follow up with some to nudge them in the right direction to actually make a review. The more reviews the better. But you must instruct them what to do and how to do it. So when you launch the book you send them the link and they can write the review. They will need to say that they received a copy of the ebook. But you will find that the Amazon ranking machine kicks in more when reviews and interaction with the sales page increases.
5. If you have been online for a while and have interacted with people you might be able to get a review or an interview. You will have to plead with some, but the guest post exposure can be helpful- also it is a good link back that can stay around for ever online. Some people who do not have blogs/ websites and are just starting out do interviews and guest posts.
6. Used paid ads. Rob found it OK, Sold some books but that was all. Didn't find it as effective as some authors.
7. Rob created an audiobook. These can be effective especially if they are quick reads- or reads from a commuter standpoint. Sometimes it is another way to repurpose your content for a different audience.
