Honey, Affiliates, Cookies
The link is where this was first reported.
It seems like Honey (the popular free browser) was maybe affiliate sniping- inserting their code (cookie- a tracking link to give credit to the seller) at checkout- being the last affiliate the buyer uses.
Sounds bad, and depending on how you do it it is. But, last cookie wins if that is how the vendor has programmed it. Doesn't matter if you did the work. If someone uses another link, then it's their payout.
Lifetime cookie is worse. Whoever got there first wins. Regardless on how many people promote the product in the months/ years to come.
What happens if someone clears their cookie cache? And then clicks on someone elses cookie- they get the credit.
This is an issues with affiliate selling, always has been. 30 day cookies are great because not too many people buy straight away, they usually buy within a week or so (hence preselling).
You can identify if something is going on if your sales start to reduce from being quite stable.
Also make sure your links don't show your referral link.This is not disguising the link- you have to say links are affiliate based. But the actual link (https etc) is short and more concise.
Something to be aware of though.
