This selling an ebook series is part of the "selling digital products" series that can be found here.
We will have a look at CatherineManning and give an overview how they have sold their ebooks online.
Obvs we are not going to copy the whole post (it is kinda long and deep) so we will just highlight the main parts.
Why?
Because Catherine discussed different ways of selling an ebook- through teaching courses and Gumroad. And also, Catherine mentions the following:
1. Writing Your Ebook
Catherine describes her experience writing a lengthy 190-page ebook and highlights that ebook lengths can range from as short as 10 pages to much longer, depending on the topic and purpose.
She emphasizes starting with a solid plan or outline to ensure the content flows logically and remains focused.
The core message: quality and relevance matter more than the number of pages.
2. Tools for Writing Your Ebook
For writing, she suggests using common tools like Pages (for Mac users) or Microsoft Word. Both are easy to use and sufficient for formatting basic ebooks. Catherine recommends saving the final version as a PDF, which is widely accepted and maintains formatting.
For bloggers aiming to publish on platforms like Amazon Kindle, Catherine stresses reviewing specific formatting guidelines to ensure the ebook meets platform requirements (like ePub or MOBI formats for Kindle).
We have found that if you have A Word document Amazon is completely fine with that and they upload and convert it themselves.
3. Publishing Your Ebook
Catherine shares various publishing options: Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP): Great for reaching a global audience, though it involves navigating Amazon’s publishing rules.
Blurb: A platform suited for more design-heavy or image-rich ebooks.
Plugins for Direct Website Sales: This allows you to sell ebooks directly on your blog or site, bypassing third-party platforms and keeping full control of pricing and earnings.
Catherine encourages bloggers to select a publishing platform based on their audience and how they want to distribute their work.
We have found that some people like Amazon, but they will happily buy through other means if shown the opportunity. We have had equal sales through Smashwords (now Draft2Digital) as well as Amazon. Mainly because people have bought through the iStore.
4. Selling An Ebook
Manning discusses her personal use of Teachable to sell both her courses and ebooks, highlighting its ease of use and professional design.
Catherine mentions other sales platforms like Gumroad or using a blog-integrated plugin (like WooCommerce or Easy Digital Downloads) for a direct sales approach.
For bloggers prioritizing a larger reach, she recommends Amazon as it connects authors with a vast audience, though it takes a cut of profits.
Key takeaway: Choose the sales method that aligns with your audience size, platform comfort, and revenue goals.
It is nice to get different resrouces and people who have tried different selling methods. We have always found the following:
