An Author Describes The Books To Sell On Amazon...With Minimal Effort

books to sell on amazon

This comes from Sparrows End Business Diaries and describes the history and types of books to sell on Amazon. It is KDP which is the Amazon portal to upload your files to create an ebook that is on Amazon- a Kindle book. It is Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP)

Why we picked this video:

  • There are tons of videos like this on Amazon, but similarly to our Strings And Sawdust overview, this seems to be more legit and not superstar numbers.
  • It is something that we can all relate to. One day might write something, leave it then start again in a month or so.
  • The numbers are spread over a year which is more beneficial to Amazon as they have buffers in their logarithms to slow down quick flash sales. So a year of numbers is a better predictor of sales and stability.
  • The video takes into consideration non-heavy content. So, a low content ebook

But the video doesn't show how it is done or how ebooks are created.

So what books to sell on Amazon

books to sell on amazon 2

The top selling ebook categories have been covered here. Even the evergreen versions.

What Sparrows End does is highlight what they are good at and what they found was already selling online. Why promote something and get peoples interest? Instead sell to people who are already interested.

So they chose the following:

  • Picture books
  • Notebooks
  • Planners
  • Scrapbooks

We have discussed here about using Etsy for this- they can sell well on Etsy but Amazon has an audience that will buy ebooks more readily over Etsy.

So how many did Sparrow End sell?

  • Initially 2 copies

Then as time continued and the ebooks started to be uploaded more the income also increased.

Over a year Sparrows End generates $1574/ year on Amazon KDP. This is roughly $130/ month

Why is that any good?

It is mentioned that sometimes $20 of ads are also spent upon. But generally the monthly income is passive and very little time and effort goes into maintaining the ebooks.

Why?

Because diaries, notepads and planners don't need updating too much. If you have a style that style can be used almost all year round and over many years. This would be some of the better books to sell on Amazon- even thought they are not classed as "books" in the classical sense of the word.

Sparrows End also states that scrapbooks and notepads seem to be a constant sale.

They also suggest now that they know what works in their niche they can employ that in their other niches. If scrap book planners are working in KDP then they are going to shift it over to Etsy.

They also have a plan. If they can generate $10/ month then why not $300 (converting from pounds to dollars)?

What we know of Amazon is that you need to:

  • add traffic to your products. Sell one product and it goes up the search rankings over competitors
  • joined products are better. If you have one planner then selling a few planners would be nice as Amazon will link them together "people also bought" which increases sales
  • Sparrows End has discussed creating separate pen names and filling out those businesses. This would be a good idea as planners/ scrap booking has a huge audience and has settled out more since COVID- where people who didn't scrap book have now kept with it. Gathering audience and then promoting Etsy and KDP items wouldn't be a bad idea

The video also does something that you don't often see. It promotes something that is going to come out- a course about KDP. Now why is this interesting?

  • Sparrows End has waited until 3/4 of the way through the video to slowly introduce this. it is not a hard sales pitch, actually the opposite. But if you have stayed this long into the video you probably are interested in what could be on offer
  • The video offers a signup if you are interested. So you are interested because you waited through the video and now you are a hot subject when you signup to be notified
  • The product is a beginners of KDP, what to do etc. If you are looking at this video then you might be a beginner.
  • When you watch the video, is it a hard sell? No. Is the author boasting about sales and huge payouts? No. Is it something that most people could relate to and achieve? Yes.

As always we wish Sparrows End all the best
